Solar Photovoltaic
(PV)
Part 8, SP 30:2023 sets the requirements for RCDs protecting solar PV installations
What type of RCD should you use?
Part 8, SP 30:2023 specifies the requirements for electrical installations with Solar PV systems.
Cl. 4.12.3.8 Requires protection against electric shock to be provided by a type B RCD conforming to IEC 62423.
Is an RCD required for Solar PV?
Part 8, SP 30:2023 specifies the requirements for electrical installations with Solar PV systems.
Cl. 8.8.2, Requires a.c. distribution panels to have type B RCDs conforming to IEC 62423.
Requirements for RCDs according to the system earthing configuration
IS/IEC 62548: explains the various possible configurations of system earthing in electrical installations with PV arrays. The most common are:
Non-separated system with earthed a.c. mains:
Connection of PV array to earthed a.c. mains with a non-separated inverter.
RCD (if used) shall always be type B.
Separated system (inverter with internal separation) with earthed a.c. mains:
Connection of PV array to earthed a.c. mains with an inverter having internal separation.
With functional earthing of PV array
Without functional earthing of PV array
Selection of RCD type according to connected load.
Separated system (inverter with external separation) with earthed a.c. mains:
Connection of PV array to earthed a.c. mains with an inverter and external transformer.
With functional earthing of PV array
Without functional earthing of PV array
Selection of RCD type according to connected load.
Doepke RCCBs for EVSE Applications
Doepke produces type B 30mA RCCBs, type A 30mA RCCBs with built-in RDC-DDs as well as type F 30mA RCCBs with built-in RDC-DDs which facilitate compliance with NEC 2023 for EV charging applications.

30mA Type B
