Applications for Type B RCDs

The National Electrical Code of India (SP 30:2023) mandates the use of type B RCDs for the following applications

1.  Inverters, battery storage and un-interuptable power supply (UPS) systems.

2. Variable frequency drives (VFDs), including elevators and escalators.

3. Electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE).

4. Solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an RCD and RCCB?

The term RCD and RCCB are often used interchangeably, however RCD is an umbrella term that covers RCDs, RCCBs, CBRs and MRCDs, RCCBs refer to a particular RCD- the residual current operated circuit breaker without integral overcurrent protection. See more.

What are the different types of RCDs?

There are four types of residual current devices classified according to their operation in response the presence of DC components and frequencies other than the rated frequency- Type AC, Type A, Type F & Type B. See more.

What is the difference between an ELCB and RCD?

"ELCB" refers to obsolete voltage operated earth-leakage circuit breakers, whereas RCDs refer to residual current devices.
